Product Photography Briefing 101

You found your perfect product photographer - a dream coming true! You like their style, you like their portfolio, their skillset is precisely what you need… But what next? You need to put your vision in your photographers head, and oh boy, it is not an easy task!

Here is the list of things worth mentioning and questions you need to ask yourself when giving your photographer a brief. Many people don’t realise but how well your brief is structured and how clear it is, impacts the outcome of the photoshoot. You can hire the best photographer in the world, but If you can’t explain what you want, chances are, you will not be satisfied with the result.

The most important things:

  1. How many photos you need?

  2. What kind of photos you need?

  3. Where these photos will be used?

  4. Aspect ratio, resolution and format of the images.

  5. Your deadline.

Other things to mention:

  • Is there specific colours/ colour schemes you want to see in the photos?

  • Are there particular props you would like to see?

  • Give as many details as you can, for example, the number of pictures for each product.

  • Mention any specific product combos for which you need photos.

  • Any best-sellers or any products you want to push sales for, mention them!

  • Describe your target audience that will help the photographer create imagery that your customers can relate to.

  • If you have a mood board already, a Pinterest board or just a random picture you really like, share them with your photographer.

And finally, it is always a good idea to hop on a Zoom call to discuss everything in details. This is the exact reason why I have a Discovery Call option for my clients, and if they need to discuss anything further, they can always book another call once the agreement is signed!

The most important to remember is that the quality of the outcome directly depends on the quality of a brief!
